Continuing Competence & Professional Development

Competence is described as the integration of knowledge, skills, attitudes, judgment, abilities, experience and the underlying ethical intent of professional nursing practice, in a given context, and in accordance with standards of practice.1

Nurses, as self-regulating professionals, are responsible and accountable
to the public to provide quality nursing care. Continuing education, frequently referred to as lifelong learning, is encouraged as a means towards achieving quality care. Continuing education, both formal and informal, is a critical part of continuing to be competent to practice.

Continuing competence is the demonstration of competence in current professional practice incorporating lifelong learning. A continuing competence process incorporates a process of documentation and formalizes both the non-formal and formal learning that we do as professionals in order to provide quality care.2
